The Rhode Island Envirothon is an after school program which focuses on developing knowledgeable, skilled and dedicated citizens who are willing and prepared to work towards achieving and maintaining a natural balance between the quality of life and the quality of the environment. The one-day competition marks the culmination of a year of dedicated, hard work for high school and middle school students from around the State who will compete in teams to address environmental issues which include aquatic ecology, forestry, wildlife, and soils, plus one special environmental issue which changes annually. The students take written tests for each of the first four segments, and prepare an oral presentation for the environmental issue.
Schools from around the state are eligible to participate in the competition. The winner of the state competition goes on to compete in the National Envirothon which will be held July 24 – July 29, 2016 at Trent University in Peterborough, Ontario in Canada.
