Scavenger Hunt through the Farmers Market

Saturday, March 5 9:00AM - Saturday, March 26 1:00PM | Pawtucket, RI | directions | website

March can be a challenging month for local farmers. It signals the start of a long thaw after winter and the beginning of planning for next season’s harvest. Shopping at farmers markets is a great way to support local farms year-round. But March is a time of year when local farmers need your business and support most of all.

To celebrate these local heroes, Farm Fresh Rhode Island is hosting a month of FREE special events at the Pawtucket Wintertime Farmers Market, called March Madness. Shop at the market every Saturday in March to enjoy fun events like cooking demos and pie eating contest, take advantage of seasonal sales, and participate in a one-of-a-kind scavenger hunt! Complete your hunt through the market to be entered for a chance to win prizes valued at over $300, including a night at The Dean Hotel! Just pick up your Scavenger Hunt Handout at any Welcome Table at the farmers market for more details.

Participating in March Madness is a great way to support local agriculture, empower small businesses and build vibrant community with local food at the center of every table.

Start with good seed, treat it right and you’ll end up with strong healthy plants. Hear about successful propagation techniques from experienced vegetable and herb growers Harry and Sam Chase of Chase Farms. Learn which seedlings benefit from heated benches, compost or other soil amendments. Hear the pros and cons of drip and overheard irrigation systems versus hand watering.

See one of the first mechanical seeders in commercial production – still going strong. Watch the repotting line in action. Experience creative solutions to tedious chores like moving hundreds of trays and flats with a plant “trolley” and repurposed golf ball racks. The Chases maximize space efficiency with rolling benches and stack trays for delivery in their Blue Begonia Bus – a repurposed soda delivery truck.

Enjoy a behind-the-scenes tour at this wholesale annual and perennial nursery serving garden centers and landscapers. Chase Farms grows in 25 greenhouses and high tunnels making it the “largest grower in the smallest state.” The Chases and their customers practice environmentally conscious cultivation.
