Winter Growing with Movable Greenhouses

Roots Farm is one of the few farms in Rhode Island with movable greenhouses. Mike and Kelli will discuss the advantages and uses of movable houses and low tunnels for winter growing. Attendees will learn how to (and help) move the two houses that day, weather permitting.

Roots Farm is a certified organic, diversified vegetable farm in Tiverton, RI with a focus on year-round growing using only the sun for heat. Through the winter, cold-hardy crops are grown in unheated, moveable greenhouse and low tunnels. In the spring, a wide range of vegetables get a head start in the greenhouse and low tunnels. This farm produces nutrient-dense, delicious crops for customers. Roots Farm is committed to sustainable farming, and never uses chemical fertilizers, pesticides or herbicides.

This event is geared towards farmers, farm apprentices and farm workers. Everyone is welcome.

Harvest Dinner

On Sunday, November 4th, Chef Stephen Gordon and a team of culinary students from Johnson & Wales University will prepare a special Harvest Dinner at Sandywoods. This full course dinner, to be served at 4:30 pm, will celebrate and honor the hard work of the crew at Freedom Food Farm in Johnston, RI.

Net proceeds from this benefit dinner will go to support Freedom Food Farm's operations next season. All of the Harvest Dinner's ingredients will be locally sourced, with much of the food coming from the farm itself.

Chuck Currie and the rest of the team at Freedom Food Farm are committed to helping provide fresh, healthy, organically grown produce to everyone in the community, regardless of income. To accomplish this goal of equal food access, they offer sliding scale CSA shares, and they also donate thousands of pounds of produce throughout the growing season to the Rhode Island Food Bank and local food pantries and distribution centers.

Please save the date and join us at this special Harvest Dinner. The cost for the entire full course meal is $35.00. Children under 12 are free. Tickets will be sold at the door starting at 3:30 pm. You are welcome to BYOB if you wish.

Georges Bank is the shallow offshore plateau that lured Europeans to America with its wealth of cod and other bottom fish. Today's fishing boats have come a long way from those of yesteryear, but Georges Bank still fills their holds with groundfish and scallops.

Join Chef Jake Rojas for a culinary tour of this legendary ecosystem. Featuring fish and shellfish caught by local fishermen and landed in New Bedford, MA and Point Judith, RI, the dinner will be narrated by a guest scientist and a guest fisherman intimately acquainted with this rich yet changing ecosystem.
