Pickling with Salt with Hawthorne Valley's Seth Travins

Learn how to create delicious, nutritious pickles through the wonder of lacto-fermentation. Lacto-fermentation is the original and a healthy way of making pickles, sauerkraut, kimchee, and many other traditional foods. We will learn health benefits and make a batch of sauerkraut to take home and also sample some other fermented foods. Seth Travin has made sauerkraut for over 9 years and works at the SauerKraut Cellar at Hawthorne Valley Farm and sells to the Berkshire Mountain Coop. You will make and take home pickles & sauerkraut using organic veggies(bring 'em along!). Seth runs the Sauerkraut Cellar at Hawthorne Valley Biodynamic Farm.

Tree Identification

Join local botanist Ben Morton on a walkabout of the property looking at different tree species. Several unique tree varieties found on the farm will be noted. Finally, learn proper technique for planting ornamentals as we plant a tree on the farm! Fee: $8/adult, $5/child

Vegetable Twilight Meeting

Kristen Dame (URI) will lead a tour of the University’s specialty squash/brassica crops.

Guest speakers Ruth Hazzard (UMASS) and Jude Boucher (UCONN) will share squash/brassica growing strategies and pest information.

Participants will receive a sit-down supper as well as 2 hours of pesticide credits.

Cost: $10 per person. Make checks payable to URI.

Chef Eve Formisano Ornstedt returns this summer to offer a unique series of cooking demonstrations which will help people utilize the awesome variety of fruits and vegetables available from the farm. When weather permits, demonstrations will take place outdoors. Enjoyable and educational, you’ll leave these demonstrations will a full belly and some recipes to bring home. All workshops are $25 per adult and $10 for children (ages 8 and older only please).

Garlic Braiding and Grapevine Wreaths

URI GreenShare Field Day

Slow Food RI Autumn Dinner

The first event for the newly reinvigorated chapter of Slow Food RI is being held on Sept 30 from 5-8 pm at La Laiterie in Providence. The event will feature a collaborative menu created by La Laiterie chef Matt Jennings and New Rivers chef Beau Vestal. The dinner will include 5 courses that showcase 5 local farmers. The cost for the dinner is $55 and includes wine/beer for each offering. Space is very limited so book your tables early. Membership kits will be available for any and all wishing to join Slow Food International.
