Fraser Orchard in Greene, RI integrated pest mgmt
Ken Stukas took over the family orchard (Fraser Orchard, West Coventry) and supplies the Westbay Farm Stand. Unlike, the Westbay Community Garden, Ken uses pesticides at times. He has 200 apple trees and several varieties, including Esopus Spitzenburg, originally grafted from one of Thomas Jefferson's trees at Monticello! There's an apple that tastes like a pear. And he sells apple cider he presses on site. The Chinese Chestnut trees provide about 1/2 dozen chestnuts by Columbus Day! Apples sell for 60 cents a pound. He also sells Christmas trees and wreaths. The orchard is open weekends 10-4 for PYO (pick your own) from September 1 into November, when the Christmas trees are ready to be tagged and then cut down.
